Charm is a rare Douro wine. Its elegance and complexity, its soft, ripe tannins are a unique way of expressing the freshest and most sheltered old vineyards of the Mendiz Valley, in the middle of the Pinhão valley. Dirk Niepoort has in Charm his ultimate interpretation and denounced passion for the region of Burgundy. A signature wine, an odd wine. Charm is the only quiet wine produced in the Vale de Mendiz wine cellar, in historic round granite wineries. Winemaking The wine year of 2013/2014 will be remembered for its instability. The grape harvest for the Charme in Vale de Mendiz started early on September 1st and most of the grapes were harvested before the effects of the rain, which during September was 56.6 mm in Cima Corgo – well above Of the average of 30 mm of the last decades. A very strict selection was made at the table of choice to ensure that only the best fruit would be selected. The grapes were gently crushed with 100% stalks in granite wineries where they were trodden on foot. The most important in this winemaking is the duration of pre-fermentation maceration and beginning of alcoholic fermentation, where the extraction is very rigorous. The Charme is initially fermented in a mill, followed by the barrel, where the fermentation ends. The process is completed with the racking and aging in French oak barrels for 15 to 19 months. Test results The Charm 2014 shows a bright and clear red color with a purity of fantastic fruit, reminiscent of wild strawberries and cherry along with a gentle character of earth. On the palate, a delicate silky fruit leads to a rustic end of land with great freshness, balance and structure. At this stage, the fresh fruit predominates but is supported by a firm structure, suggesting that it will age well in the bottle.
